Devon is located in the South West of
England, flanked by the Bristol Channel to the north and the English Channel to
the south. Devon covers a total area of 2,590 square miles and has a population
of over a million people. The county was previously known as ‘Devonshire’. The
county town of Devon is the city of Exeter.
Devon is well known for its picturesque
coastline, which includes cliffs and sandy shores. Devon’s beaches such as
Broadsands on the English Rivierea, are a favourite tourist attraction, attracting
thousands of visitors every year. Around Start Point in South Devon is the
three mile pebble beach at Slapton Sands and the pleasant family beach of
Blackpool Sands.
Devon is also famous for Dartmoor and
Exmoor National Parks and their associated high moorland landscape.
Famous past residents include Agatha Christie, a
famous English writer who was born and grew up in Torquay. She wrote more than
70 well known novels with some of her most well known characters being Hercule
Poiriot and Miss Jane Marple. Other famous residents of Devon include Rosie
Huntington Whiteley, a famous model and actress who was born in Plymouth
