Kent is a
home county located in the south east of England, it is often referred to as
The Garden of England. The county is spread across a total of 1,223 square
miles and has an approximate population of 1.8 million people. Kent’s
county town is Maidstone, which is situated just under 40 miles from central
London. Other notable towns are Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Dover and Rochester.
One of
Kent’s art galleries is the Turner Contemporary, which boasts work by some of
Britain’s best painters including JMW Turner. Other popular cultural
attractions include The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge in Canterbury,
Maidenstone Museum and the Bentlif Art Gallery in Maidstone.
Kent is home
to many historical buildings including Canterbury Cathedral which is the mother
church of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The cathedral follows traditions
which reach back to medieval times. Another world famous site Kent is home to
is Heaver Castle which was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn.
Kent’s
famous past and former residents include Orlando Bloom, who was born in
Canterbury, Kent and spent many of his childhood years in the county. Other
famous residents have been Kate Lawler (model/presenter), Thom Gunn (poet) and
Dame Kelly Holmes (athlete).
Sir Winston Churchill, Britain's Wartime leader and Prime Minister made his home at Chartwell near Westerham which is now a world famous tourist attratcion run by the National Trust
